James Lee Byars. Two rare invitation cards
(1) Invitation for the opening reception of 'James Lee Byars The Perfect Thought' in Contemporary Arts Museum Houston, on 7 Sept. 1990. Black envelope, 14 x 20.5 cm, printed with exhibition information in embossed gold lettering, and elaborately hand-addressed by the artist in gold marker. The envelope is empty, except for a coiled golden thread (as issued). Mailed and postmarked copy, near mint.
(2) Invitation for 'The Death of James Lee Byars', opening July 1 1994 at Galerie Marie-Puck Broodthaers in Brussels. Red envelope with exhibition information printed in black, 11.2 x 16 cm. Contains a red card solely bearing the sentence 'The Death of James Lee Byars', printed in black. Rare document of the well-known performance by American conceptual artist James Lee Byars (1932-1997), staging a prelude to his death. The artist, entiry dressed in gold, lay in a room fully covered in gold leaf, enacting his own death. Mint, unmailed copy. (total 2)
