*During the years of occupation, the German authorities attempted to co-opt the immensely popular Dick Bos comics for their own ends. The proposal: a reissue in which the intrepid hero would be transformed into a German spy. Creator Alfred Mazure was offered a 'blank check' for this transition, but he resolutely refused with the legendary words: "I do not believe that an SS uniform would suit my hero very well." The repercussions followed swiftly: within weeks, the booklets were withdrawn from sale and Mazure was served with a professional ban. The series was officially branded as 'disguised English propaganda'.
