Piët, Frans (1905-1997). Sjors en Sjimmie. Unpublished story

India ink on paper. Complete story in nostalgic 'Wo-wang en Sjimmie' style in 14 ( consisting of 13 pages and an alternative page 2) original pages, 1980-81. Each sheet approx. 39 x 27 cm.

Frans Piët returns nostalgically to the early days of Sjors and Sjimmie. The story follows a journey from Minasoussa, with encounters involving a crocodile and a Chinese merchant, culminating in a final scene in which the duo assume the roles of Sultan and servant. Piët deliberately adopts the classic, stereotypical characterization of Sjimmie familiar from the early series: 'Sally erg lief is, Sjimmie zomaar in koelkast mag rondneuzen'. This manuscript was created years after he had been succeeded by other artists (Jan Kruis, Jan Steeman, and Robert van der Kroft, who later modernized and reshaped the characters). It may be regarded as a late example of Piët’s continued engagement with his original creations. (total 14) *Frans Piët began his work on Sjors—the Dutch successor to Martin Branner’s Perry Winkle—in 1938. This collection originates from Piët’s private archive. To our delight part of this archive, which was previously considered lost, was rediscovered in a moving box on an attic. The material is offered here in its entirety, across seven lots in this auction.
