LOT 234

[Copy belonging to a land surveyor] (Practijck des lantmetens:

leerende alle rechte ende kromzydige landen, bosschen, boomgaerden, ende andere velden meten (...) gecomponeert door Johan Sems, ende Jan Pietersz. Dou; vermeerdert met hondert geometrische questien met haer solutien door Sybrant Hansz. Amsterdam, Jan Jansz., ca. 1625), 421,(3)118,(1) p., with (folding) engr. plates and woodcut in-text illustrations, contemporary overlapping vellum with remainders of binding ribbons.

This copy is missing at least the title page, which has been replaced (as has damaged page Y4 and a double-paged plate) by a photocopy; text block nearly loose in bindings. Sold WAF. Clearly a much-used copy. Copy with a special provenance: "Desen boeck competeert aen S. de Smeth gesworen lantmeter, bij den souvereijnen Raede geordonneert in Brabandt geadmitteert tot nochters tijdt binnen de parochie ende hoofdbancke van ste. Quintens Lennicke [Sint Quintens Lennik] residerende. Actum (...) 1764." Apart from this annotation on the inner endpaper, the first free endpaper has also been annotated elaborately in pen, signed G. van der Meyrs (...), and on the final page another annotation in pen reads "De maten vande lande van brabant". Rare handbook, especially with such a provenance.
