The author Van Leeuwen was clerk of the court in Leeuwarden. Weijnma was born in Rien (Hennaarderadeel) in 1811. He became a shepherd and farmhand. In June 1836 he married Hiltje Rimmerts Zijlstra and on 14 December 1836 she died suddenly; according to the autopsy by the physician of Jorwerd, Peerdemans Bogtstra, by poisoning. On 7 July 1837 Weijnma was executed for double murder. Appendix E. shows in various tables the number of convicts in Friesland from 1813 to 1822, the nature of the crimes and the punishments.

Thoden van Velzen was preacher in Leeuwarden and conducted several conversations with Van Dijk in prison. In the book the author writes extensively about Van Dijk's behaviour and his conversations with him in prison. (total 2)
