Karel Appel

6 handwritten letters from correspondence between Karel Appel and Jan Vrijman mainly discussing the production of the film ‘The Reality of Karel Appel’. The letters are dated between 31 Nov. 1956 and 11 May 1964.

The letters give an insight into the process of setting up the film, and also into the friendship between both men. For example, Appel repeatedly asks Vrijman with warmth though also insistance to respond to his letters ('Schrijf nu eens terug wat de plannen zijn'), visit him in Paris or to swiftly supply the film - after completion - so Appel can use it for a painting biennial in May 1964 in Paris; 'In mijn kaart [unfortunately not included] schreef ik al reeds over de film. Dat is erg belangrijk veel mensen uit Amerika gaan er heen en er is tevens een schilderijen biennale waar ik aan meedoe, en wil ik dat de film er ook is want er komen meer kunstfilmen'. Added: an original poster, ‘15 keer Karel Appel’, Galerie Krikhaar (Amsterdam, 1964). 58.5 x 30 cm. Also; two reference works titled: ‘Films from the Netherlands’ (fair condition, i.e. complete but with a number of loose albeit undamaged leaves. 26 x 21 cm.) and: Berlin 1962, ‘Die Niederlande Zeigen’ – XII Internationale Filmfestspiele (good condition, complete, 26 x 21 cm.).
