[Nieuwe Schouwburg. Proofs] Series of 5 engravings of stage backdrops,

by Isaac Janszoon de Wit after Jan Bulthuis, ca. 1787-1794, each 21.5 x 24.5 cm. (margins here and there trifle soiled).

Part of the series of a total of fourteen stage backdrops of the new Amsterdamse Schouwburg, 1787-1794. Proofs or separate prints of only the stage setting and without the mount with the stage and the house, with only the title of the set engraved below the image: "Het gotisch paleis", "De kerker", "De legertenten", "De Romeinsche hofzaal" and "De ouderwetse Burgerkamer". Prints of the series with the names of the artists exist and surrounding the images shown by our print series the added audience in the theatre itself (by Jan Gerard Waldorp). The edge of the copperplate used for our series is therefore a long way removed from the image, so that the aforementioned inscription might be engraved in this wide margin. In the final, finished prints some engravings cross into Bulthuis's part (total of 15 prints).
