[Copy belonging to Maarten Maartens] Little Journeys to the Homes of Eminent Orators

Pericles. Written by Elbert Hubbard (...). New York, The Roycrofters, 1903, (6),29,(1) p., with hand-coloured title page, initials and ornaments by S. Warner, original gilt lettered flexibel suede (sm. defects).

With a dedication in pen on the first free endpaper: "To J.W. van der Poorten Schwartz with Compliments of his American Friend and admirer James Carleton Young Minneapolis, Minnesota, U.S.A. November 20th 1903". Maarten Maartens, pseudonym of Jozua Marius Willem van der Poorten Schwartz (1858-1915), was a Dutch author who was well known internationally (particularly in England and the US) at the end of the 19th century, but quickly forgotten afterwards. See online: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maarten_Maartens. James Carleton Young (1856-1918), too, is no stranger. He collected 19th century books of American and foreign authors with dedications. His beautiful collection went under the hammer in 1916, and indeed, no less than 10 numbers (470, 472, 588, 589, 590, 626, 627, 702, 703 and 704) in that auction catalogue concerned book by Maarten Maartens, almost all of them with (long) dedications by the author.
