Gerda van der Veen was spouse to photographer Ed van der Elsken from 1957 to 1971 and the daughter of sculptor G.J. (Gerrit) van der Veen and photographer Louise van der Veen. The Amsterdam street culture was her favorite subject. In the photo a laughing Ed van der Elsken extends his middle finger to a person outside the image.
