Jos Ruting (1909-1987)

Text and images for a shell book Ruting made for publication from ca. 1957. Three pages in watercolour and dozens of pages with sketches and drawings for a book on shells which was never published. With text pages, annotations and correspondence regarding the publication.

Ruting tried to have this Schelpenboek published at both De Bezige Bij and Elsevier, but failed in both cases. Included is correspondence with both publishers. Elsevier, which had previously published small manageable and cheap shell books, considered the price the major obstacle. From De Bezige Bij's Geert Lubberhuizen the reply came as follows: "Het is een leuk boekje, en wij hebben het dan ook van alle kanten ernstig bekeken. Maar het feit dat er over de verschillende onderdelen van dit boekje al kleine boekjes in de handel zijn, bemoeilijkt de zaak in niet geringe mate. Wij hebben uiteindelijk dan ook maar besloten het boekje niet uit te geven, mede omdat het niet zo zeer in ons fonds past. (...)"
