Max Rooses. Museum Plantin-Moretus

Le Musee Plantin-Moretus. Contenant la vie et l'oeuvre de Christophe Plantin et de ses successeurs Les Moretus ainsi que la description du musée et de ses collections qu'il renferme. Max Rooses. Antwerp, G. Zazzarini & Co. [printed by J.E. Buschmann], 1914. Large folio (54 x 32 cm.). Faux-leather, title on spine in black and gilt stamping, marbled endpapers, title in red and black, (10),407,(10) pp., 37 full-page plates with 59 copper engravings and 16-full page plates in woodcut. These plates printed from originals kept at the museum; also more than 300 illustrations inside and outside the text.

The engravings, woodcuts and illustrations are impressions from famous publications, such as Guicciardini's town boek, de la Serre's 'Entrée de la Reyne-Mère du Roy très Chrestien' from Les villes des Pays-Bas'. Title pages by Rubens, woodcuts in chiaroscuro by Goltzius from his Icones Imperatorum, Antwerp, 1645. At the front an inserted double page [1955] with dedication to Achiel van Acker, Prime Minister, in memory of his visit to Antwerp, on behalf of the College van Burgemeester en Schepenen van Antwerpen; with signatures of secretary K.C. Peeters and mayor L. Craeybecks. A monumental work on heavy Van Gelder paper. Numbered copy 308 (of 500). Very good.
