Photo collection of banker, athlete and artist Johan Hendrik Pootjes (1882-1944)

(1) "Foto's uit Indië van Joh. H. Pootjes III". Book with more than 60 pre-war photos, mostly mounted but partly inserted, ± 6 x 8 to 15 x 20 cm., partly with captions or inscriptions on reverse, original halfcloth with title label on front board and label of Louis Lorjé goedkope kantoorboekhandel (Amsterdam) to inside front board, 20.5 x 17 cm.

The extremely versatile, affluent and generous Johan Hendrik Pootjes was vice president of the Nederlandsch Oost-Indische Escompto Maatschappij, one of the three largest banks in the Dutch East Indies. He was also an excellent athlete in various disciplines and a prolific painter and drawing artist. This photobook contains many group photos of Pootjes and fellow Dutchmen and of Indonesians, and many photos of buildings. A few of the captions: "Het opperhoofd Dongie omringd door zijn getrouwen"; (with a mounted drawing): "Chineesch Koopman. Zo één heb ik er met mijn fiets omver gereden"; "1 Bengalees 3 Chineesen en 4 Klingaleezen."; "Ben ik. Aan het strand v. Perboeangan Sumatra's O.K. 1/12 '18 Joop" (group portrait); "Kaban Djahé. Wahaale de 'Piccolo'van ons huis Wilhelminastraat no. 20"; "Wilhelminastraat 20. De auto is niet van ons 18/3 '17"; "De Medansche Kalverstraat onder water"; "Bataksche dans"; (2) "Schuttersmaaltijd". Framed photo, 17 x 23 cm., titled in red chalk and with caption in pencil: ""H.U.P." Batavia 1.3. '28. aan ons eerelid: Joh. H. Pootjes", with address of photographer Van Felde, Weltevreden, Java. And with 7 other photos, mostly group portraits (3x large size and mounted on cardboard).
