[Provo. Anti-smoking lobby] Typed transcript of a phone conversation,

between Jasper Grootveld and Lenze Meinsma, 5 one-sided typed leaves, in original file with label on the spine ("Dictaat no. 1"), 4to size. Added: A picture of Jasper Grootveld writing 'Ben uw ook al an de Kanker' on a tobacco promotional poster. 21 x 29 cm.

Lovely, extraordinary transcript of a telephone conversation between two anti-smoking big shots: doctor and initiator of the first quit-smoking actions, Lenze Meinsma (1923-2008) and artist and anti-smoking guru, Robert Jasper Grootveld (1932-2009). The transcript gives a short and concise view of the anti-smoking situation in the Netherlands. Grootveld asks about Meinsma's efforts for a tobacco-discouragement policy, with much attention devoted to the anti-smoking clinics in England. Grootveld also indicates having made many phone calls to doctors and professors, to ask about their (negative) opinion about Meinsma and De Vaal. Grootveld compares the situation to the witch trials: "Vanuit Amsterdam hebben we heel Europa heksenvrij gemaakt. Zoiets moet ook voor het rokertje opgaan." Mild response from Meinsma. "Nou, u moet maar 'ns kijken hoor. Ik vind het wel best allemaal." Next, a lot of attention for the American situation and the Lexington cigarette brand (Grootveld: "Hier in Nederland is datzelfde Lexington ons meest verkochte sigaretje"). In the same file (altogether 102 pages) several similar transcripts of phone conversations, which at times read like a film script. The file thus provides an amazing insight into the smoking debate in those days. Conversations between Jasper Grootveld and Dr. De Vaal (7 pages), relatives of A.J. Blok and the N.V. Blok office (13 pages in which the Provos are mentioned): Meinsma (8 pages, about arrests, the police as communication snare, martyrs, revolution, Provo, happenings); Mrs. Van der Poll; Mr. Wensveen (very long conversation, 12 pages, about happenings, policing, Het Lieverdje ("sinds 1960 staat het daar en sinds die tijd staat het daar een gebeuren te wezen"), Roel van Duyn, Lexington, Sinterklaas, Klaas); De Vaal (12 pages, about smoking and the "waanzinnige warning" against it, cancer, Professor Drogendijk, patronising, alcohol, habit versus addiction (De Vaal: "er is geen verslaving aan tabak. Er is een rookgewoonte."; Grootveld: "het is een ingekankerde levensbehoefte"); office of Professor Drogendijk; Mr. Houweling (20 pages, mostly an incredible monologue by Grootveld); Dr. Meurs (6 pages); attempts to speak to Westerterp; Mr. Koekebakker.
