John Brookhouse (=Jan Broekhuis (1901-1974)

Extensive archive of composer Jan Broekhuis consisting of hundreds of manuscript music scores, photos, administration, posters, correspondence (a.o. personal letters to and from colleagues, a plea letter from his orchestra not to sack a fellow musician, a letter to his son), music recordings (Arrangement of Claire de Lune by Brookhouse, played at the AVRO, 1952 on 6 unique vinyl records), drawings, etc.

Broekhuis was known under his artist's name John Brookhouse McCarthy was a teacher at the conservatory in Limoges, France and afterwards became director at the Theatre Francais in Bordeaux. After his return to the Netherlands he had his biggest success with the musique he composed for the first Dutch movie De Jantjes in 1934, from which 'Omdat ik zoveel van je hou" became an instant evergreen. Besides songs for revue, cabaret and schlagers he composed violin sonatas, nocturnes, burlesques and arranged several classical pieces (all of which are in the archive), he accompanied Mistinguet in Folies Bergere and his orchestra played during the Dutch tours of Charles Trenet and Josephine Baker in 1956. The last part of his life he lived in Switzerland where he was a succesful concert pianist until the end.
