[Biblia Neerlandica De Laet 1556] Den Bibel, inhoudende het oude ende nieuwe testament,

met grooter neerstigheyt overghesteldt ende ghecorrigeert na dat oprecht Latijnsch exemplaer. (...) met veel schoone figuere verciert (...). Antwerp, Hans de Laet, 1556, 2 parts in 1 vol., (4),(408) [incl. final blank]; (96) lvs., title page printed in red and black and within woodcut border of illustrations, num. woodcut illustrations in the text, contemporary blindstamped panelled sheepskin over wooden boards, brass catches, remnants of clasps and corner strips preserved.

Title leaf damaged, else partly dam. in blank margins at the beginning and end, partly remargined or strengthened there (hardly any loss of text). Generally, the contents in between in good condition, occas. small defects and traces of age, a few misbound lvs. Binding dam./ worn at spine and along edges; leather at upper joint split, but good holding on thick double cords. In all, for this kind of book meant for daily use, an acceptable and complete copy in its original binding, with old owner's entries on (loose) upper free endpaper/ blanks: "Ad usum P.P. Capucinorum Hasselensium" and "Fratrum capucinorum Munsterclifiensium [?]". Rare Antwerp edition reprinted from the edition published at Leuven, 1553, as indicated on Bbb7v of the Old Testament. Translated and with introduction by the Leuven monk Nicolaus van Winghen, the first edition in this form appeared in 1548. The bible is illustrated with clearly different kinds of woodcuts, partly copies after Holbein and partly by various Antwerp artists such as Arnold Nicolai.
