Utriusque Aedificiis illustrata. In multis locis aucta, castigator reddita, indice locupletissiomo, & figuris Aeneis illustrata. Editio ultima. Printen in Kampen by Casparus Cotius for Janssoons van Waesberge & Joannes Wolters in Amsterdam, 1694/1695, (16), 356,(20) p., with engr. frontispiece by J.F. Greuter and 98 engravings on 93 (folding) plates (including fine folding maps, mostly depicting buildings in their original state and their ruins at the time the book appeared), many engraved ills. in the text, finely bound in contemp. panelled vellum ("Hoorns perkament"), both covers with central coat of arms of Hoorn (Spoelder, Hoorn 2), together with corner fleurons within double fillet border, the fleurons repeated in 5 compartments on spine, 4to.
Title p. with small cut-out portion of lower margin, and with ann. in pen; extensive ann. on upper pastedown and first free endpaper; occas. neatly closed tears in folding plates. Lacks ties. With handwritten prize awarded to Johannes van Hogen on 4 April 1703, with the signatures of the "Curatores Gymnasii Hornani" Georgius Goethals, A. van Foreest, Florentius Costerus and 1 illegible. Also with the blind stamp of J. Dirks in several lvs. at the beginning. The first edition of this popular guide to the ancient buildings of Rome by the Siennese Jesuit Alessandro Donati (1584-1640) was published in Rome in 1638. Several more Italian editions appeared before the plates were sold to the Janssoons van Waesberge, who used them for this beautifully produced edition, adding the new frontispiece.
