[Imaginary voyages] (Simon Tyssot de Patot). Voyages et avantures de Jaques Massé

Bourdeaux (The Hague?), Jaques l'Aveugle (T. Johnson?), 1710 (= between 1714 and 1717), 1st edition, (8),508 pp., woodcut vignette on title-p., contemp. marbled calf, both covers with gilt corner fleurons within decorative gilt border, gilt boardedges, gilt and ribbed spine w. mor. letterpiece, marbled edges, large 12mo (8vo size).
Partly a bit browned. Upper joint splitting at lower compartment of spine. A very attractive copy of the first edition. Utopia p. 173; Rosenberg p.84ff, edition A; cf. Knuttel, Verboden Boeken 396. Imaginary voyages of the fictitious or pseudonymous character Jaques Massé, who is very sceptical about religion and more philosophically inclined (great admirer of Descartes and Galileo). In this nice adventure story, the main character survives a shipwreck and ends up in a utopian city. There are at least 4 different editions with the date 1710, all with fictitious adrress such as L'Utopie, Bordeaux [not Bourdeaux] and Cologne, probably all printed in The Hague. The author Simon Tyssot de Patot (1655-1738) was a teacher of mathematics in Deventer.
