William Whewell (1794-1866), British philosopher an historian of science, professor of mineralogy and moral philosophy, a man of great erudition who played an inmportant part in the academic life of his time. "His 'History of the inductive sciences', owing to the influence it exerted on J.S. Mill's 'Logic', is a landmark on the long road that leads towards logical positivism." (Schumpeter).
