[Judaica] (Desforges). Memoires anecdotes pour servir à l'histoire du M. Duliz,

fameux juif portugais à la Haye. Et la suite de ses avantures, après la catastrophe de celle de Mademoiselle Pelissier, actrice de l'Opera de Paris. London, S. Harding (= The Netherlands?), 1739. (2), 188pp., contemp. marbled wrappers, sm. 8vo.

Old annotations on final free endpaper; some foxing. A good, untrimmed copy. Rare first edition of a French comical work by the comedian Desforges of whom not much is known. It tells the story of a rich Jew, originally from England, M. Duliz, who now lives in Holland. His father married him off to a rich girl with whom he is not satisfied. And that is why he courts an actress from the opera; a source for many hilarious scenes. The story is followed (from p. 131 onwards) by a comedy by Louis de Boissy (1694-1758), which was first published in the Hague in 1734. Barbier III, 181; cf. Cioranescu 23406 and 12358.I.
