First edition of this French translation of 'An attempt towards a natural history of the polype', first published in 1743. *The interest in the freshwater polyp was triggered by the discovery and description of the animal by Abraham Trembley. Together with Martin Folkes, baker carries out experiments on this animal, resulting in the book. Baker is best known for the popularisation of the microscope.
