ausländischer und seltener Vögel. Collection of 40 (of 473) loose col. plates by the German artist and engraver Johann Michael Seligmann (1720–1762). Plate col. still vibrant, some foxing especially around edges, some plates torn in the corners, and some have sm. holes in corners from previous mounts.

Incl. ills. of a.o.: sitta capite nigro; picus ventre rubro; ispida major, africana; aquila capite albo; mondedula purpurea; anas bahamensis; hortulanus caroliniensis; and columba capite albo. Printed signature of "J. M. Seligmann fec. et exu." (with variants) visible on most of the plates. Truly beautiful set of ills. (total 40) *The original work was first publ. in 9 parts in 3 vols. in Nuremberg by Johann Joseph Fleischmann, 1749-1776. These plates are some examples of Sligmann's best-known ornithological artwork in Sammlung verschiedener ausländischer und seltener Vögel, a work which included plates based on the works of Mark Catesby and George Edwards. Seligmann received his initial training in engraving and art at the Nürnberger Malerakademie and some of his earlier works included depictions of various rocks and minerals. His other works include the Opera Botanica, publ. 1754.
