Unter der Aufsicht von/ sous la direction de J.G. Grohmann. Fascicle 1-21, 39 (printed 29 on wrapper but corrected in pen to 39), 49-54 and 56-60. No. 1-11 in second edition. Leipzig/ Paris etc., Baumgärtner/ Fuchs etc., c. 1797-1811, 33 (of 60) fascicles with altogether 300 (of 301) plates (of which 40 handcoloured and one folding) with accompanying text in German and French, loose as published in original uniform letterpress wrappers, large 4to.
Lacks plate 7 of the fifth fascicle. Several fascicles waterstained (especially nos. 49-56, these also bumpy, 2 with label on back of wrapper and 3 with library stamp on front wrapper. Occasional minor defects such as minor tears/ fraying on inside and outside (no. 18 gnawed in margin, fascicle 21 wrapper in two parts), foxing etc. yet a good, untrimmed set, entirely as published (so mostly without separate letterpress title page with the wrapper serving as title). Many volumes bound with extras such as the Literarischer Anzeiger and/ or publisher's advertisements.
Beautiful and relatively large series of this periodical dedicated to the originally English phenomenon of "follies", architectural elements in large (landscape) gardens. A number of the plates depict outside parlour games, carnival equipment or furniture. Complete sets of 60 fascicles (1796-1811) are extremely rare, also large sets such as ours only rarely appear on the market.
