[Renaissance binding] Book binding of profusely blindstamped pigskin across wooden boards,
c. 1584, front board with centered panel stamp with Christ on the cross, back board with similar stamp with the resurrection of Christ, both panel stamps surrounded by roll stamps, else a ribbed back and two copper clamps, 18 x 13 x 5.5 cm.
Back board with a few minimal wormholes, front board with several wormholes. Bound around: a Plantin edition 1584 (volume 2 of 4 volumes by Luis de Granada, with many wormholes). An old antiquarian's strip to the inside of the back board, on which is indicated that the binding is presumably the work of bookbinder HIF, of whom Haebler lists only 3 bindings (all in Stuttgart). Haebler suspects a workshop at Wengen, supported by owner's mark "Cart. Buxheim" (famous monastic library, see also lot 314 in this auction) on the title page. "Haebler I, 203, Rolle 2 (?) Platten I u. II".
