[Finely illustrated Erasmus edition] L'Eloge de la Folie, Composé en forme de Decamation

Par Erasme de Rotterdam. Avec quelques Notes de Listrius, & belles figures de Holbenius. Le tout sur l'Original de l'Academie de Bâle (...). Traduite nouvellement en François Par Monsieur Gueudeville. Leiden, Pierre van der Aa, 1713, (36),312 p., with engraved portrait of Erasmus, Moore and Holbein, engraved frontispiece, dedication vignette, 6 folding, engraved plates and 75 illustrations in the text, contemporary calf, both boards with gilt border, richly gilt back, 12mo.

Two folding plates partly missing, another folding plate with repaired tear; contents here and there trifle stained. Top hinge tender on inside and small tears in both hinges on outside; outer corner renewed. With ex libris of F. Renard on inside front board. Scarce first edition of this French translation, with fine engravings after Holbein. The dedication of the printer is addressed to Jean de Bye (mayor of Leiden). From page 297 on the book consists of a publisher's catalogue of books, maps and prints.
