[James Duffield Harding] The Park and The Forest by J.D. Harding

London, T. Maclean, 1841, plate index and 26 "lithotint" plates (incl. title), contemporary half morocco, gilt, ribbed back dated 1844 [date on title read incorrectly], top edge gilt, large folio.

Inside here and there some stains and with in pencil the extended title of the plate index added to the short title below the plates; several protective sheets creased/with folds. Leather rubbed in places and the corners bumped. Good copy. Brilliant, monumental work, entirely dedicated to trees in England, with the type and location of the pictured specimen listed in the index. Remarkably, the lithographs have retained the feel of the original drawings, thanks to a technique developed by Harding himself, which involves drawing on the stone with a brush instead of a crayon, a technique he called "lithotint". But also thanks to a printing procedure patented by C. Hullmandel.
