[Rare first French edition, printed in Amsterdam] De la nature humaine,
London [= Amsterdam], no publisher, 1772, (4),IV,171 p., 19th-century half vellum.
Waterstained in blank margins at the beginning and end. Good copy of the rare first French edition. The "Avertissement" mentions a date of first publication of this work in 1640; that year did indeed see manuscript copies in circulation. The dedication by Hobbes to "Guillaume Comte de Newcastle" is dated 9 May 1640 in this translation. The first printed version was published in 1650 without the author's permission. Remarkably, PiCarta lists digital copies in Dutch libraries, yet no physical copies.
