[Catchpenny prints. Only known copy, unrecorded] "De vyftien mysterien"
Catchpenny print with 15 oval thumb-coloured woodcuts depicting biblical scenes, sheet size 33 x 42 cm, with address Rotterdam, Jacobus Thompson, c. 1795, numbered 100 in upper right corner, under passe-partout.
Sl creased and with folds, but in very good condition for this type of print. The only known copy, unrecorded. On the Thompson firm, see Boerma, Borms et al., Kinderprenten, volksprenten, centsprenten, schoolprenten. Populaire grafiek in de Nederlanden 1650-1950, p. 289-290 (no mention of this print in the running text nor in the list of the Thompson fund in Bijlage 1): "De firma Thompson heeft devotieliteratuur, almanakken en kinder- en volksprenten gedrukt van 1786 tot 1837. (...) De tekst onder de prenten noemt zes firmanten: 1. Jacobus Thompson (1786 tot 1810) (...)." Cf. De Meyer, p. 317, listing a different print under number 100. In his entire work, De Meyer does not mention any other print with the subject of our print. Apparently, our print belongs to the ones that at some point in time became outdated and were replaced with more modern subjects.
