[Catchpenny prints] "Kwakzalver Jurgen staat hier afgebeeld naar 't leven;
om diefstal uit zijn land verbannen en verdereven (...)." Catchpenny print with a single large woodcut signed "Oortman" in the block, 28 x 26.5 cm (sheet measures 41.5 x 33 cm), with letterpress introductory line above the image and an extensive verse in two columns below the image, with address Amsterdam, J. Bouwer, (1805), lettered "O" in upper right corner.
Central horizontal fold; sl. creased; an excellent copy for this kind of print. De Meyer p. 265 ff. and Ratelband & Brouwer cat. Nut, letter O; Muller, (Historieprenten), 3981. Our print is the letter "O" of a series of prints by J. Bouwer, ordered by the educational society "Tot Nut van het Algemeen". They were lettered instead of numbered, and marked with the woodcut vignette of the society. Our print, however, is in the first issue, before the vignette. The subject of "Quack Jurgen" became rather popular, it was republished several times. See Boerma, Borms et al, Kinderprenten, volksprenten, centsprenten, schoolprenten.
