[First edition, with interesting provenance] Histoire du Christianisme des Indes;
Par M.V. La Croze, Bibliothécaire & Antiquaire du Roi de Prusse. The Hague, Gebroeders Vaillant & N. Prevost, 1724, (16),570,(54) p., with engraved title page, engraved title vignette and 3 plates, contemporary sheepskin, richly gilt and ribbed back with morocco letterpiece (here and there trifle waterstained).
Lovely copy with interesting provenance: with the owner's stamp of W.B. Chorley on the title page. His collection was sold at auction in 1846, the catalogue with the title "Catalogue of an extensive and valuable collection of Spanish books: the property of W.B. Chorley, esq. (...)" is available online in its entirety, with indication of prices and buyers. Our title is included in that catalogue with two other works by Veyssière la Croze at number 730, with the name Gray in pen as buyer and the price 10 s. (?) in the margin. Our copy therefore has the heraldic ex libris of this buyer Ralph William Grey (1819-1869, British MP) [not Gray, he was probably present in person] on the inside of the front board.
The rare first printing of this important treatise on Christianity in India. On the author, Maturin Veyssière La Croze (1661–1739) see: https://tinyurl.com/mnwt6dz.
