Large folio, vellum, allegorical frontispiece, title with vignette, unpaginated; dedication, foreword and index, followed by 97 of 105 full-page engravings (lacks portrait of the author and nos. 19, 20, 49, 50, 51, 53, 55 and 56). Engravings in strong prints, various leaves with minor restoration, various pages loose, (water) stains and fingerprints outside the print image, binding shabby and tender. Sold w.a.f., as collection of prints.
Govert Bidloo was a doctor, professor of anatomy and medicine at Leiden, playwright, poet, dramaturge and above all personal physician to king-stadtholder William III. The beautifully finished engravings betray the artistic hand of Gerard de Lairesse. First edition, on large paper.
