*This work was published in 1854, 2 years after the publication of Uncle Tom's Cabin. Hoëvell, a liberal, wrote the book when the abolition of slavery was debated in the Dutch parliament. Baron van Hoëvell mainly writes on the very harsh treatment of the slaves in Suriname (total 2).
