Charles V, Holy Roman king and emperor (1500-1558). Unfinished patent of nobility 1531
Manuscript in pen on vellum, dated 1531, signed "Carolo" below the text and (counter)signed "Alf. Valdesius" [Alfonso de Valdez, c. 1490-1532, secretary of the king/ emperor], on reverse several old summaries in pen and ink, with tie in black and white for seal (not present), unfolded 44 x 63.5 cm.
Several small holes, some creasing, soiled and duststaining. Without the decorations, the top edge vaguely shows the start of an inscription in large calligraphed letters ("Carolus (...)"), in the middle of the text a rectangular box has been kept free for a coat of arms, here not completed. Saved in file of Maison Charavay, Autographs & Documents Historiques (Paris). Patent of nobility for Ludovico Danvers.
