[Gardens. Henry van Oosten] The Dutch Gardener: or, The compleat florist.

Containing, the most succesful method of cultivating all sorts of flowers; the planting, dressing, and pruning of all manner of fruit-trees. Together with a particular account on the nursing of lemon and orange trees in Northern climates. Written in Dutch, by Henri van Oosten, the Lyden gardener. Translated into English. The second edition, with great amendments. London, printed for D. Midwinter, 1711, (6),249,11,(1) p., with engraved frontispiece and 2 engraved plates, contemporary blindstamped calf, ribbed back with morocco letterpiece.

Occ. browning due to the leather and the original tie. A few corners sl. bumped. Good and attractive copy (copies of this book are generally not very well preserved due to heavy use), with old owner's name "A. Fletcher" to the title page and his or her initials "A.F." to inside front board. Rare, PiCarta lists only a copy at the Rijksmuseum. Translation of De nieuwe Nederlandse bloem-hof, ofte De sorgvuldige hovenier, issued in Leiden (the author's residence) in 1700 (no copies of that edition at the UB Leiden). The first English edition appeared in 1703 (of that edition too only 1 copy in PiCarta, at the UVA). The book has been divided into 5 chapters: I. Treating of trees and shrubs; II. Of Flowers; III. A treatise of the culture of tulips, according to the French way (...); IV. A treatise of gilly-flowers; V. An account of the sowing, rearing, and use of orange-trees.
