Main subjects of the book: (1) the history of Dutch-Japanese relations, (2) the period in which Levissohn was chief of the Factorij der Nederlandse handel op Japan, and (3) the American attempts to begin trade relations with Japan. From p. 137 the book is entirely devoted to a "Bibliografisch Overzigt over Japan".
