[Bookbindings] Statenbijbel 1791 with large golden lock

Statenbijbel issued by J. Enschedé en Zoonen at Haarlem in 1791, engraved title page with approbation in pen by Gerhardus Masman on reverse, with many engraved plates, all edges gilt, later blindstamped leather with large, profusely tooled golden clamp, small 8vo.

Backstrip loose. The bible originally had two such clamps, one above the other, later (in times of financial hardship?) reduced to one central clamp. Lovely, heavy clamp with unread marks.
