[Gorinchem] Archive of the Jewish doctor N.H.D. Schöyer (1895-1970)

Archive consisting of e.g. his school diploma 1912, doctor's diploma 1918, copies of entries in the register office, manuscript cards, distributie stamkaarten from WWII of himself, his second wife Karolina ('Lien') H.J. de Vries (1903-1963) and their son Herman F.R. Schöyer, proofs of registration of a number of Jewish ancestors of Nathan (four grandparents) and Herman Schöyer (two grandparents) (Gorinchem, 6 March 1941), proof of registration as a student of Karolina de Vries and her diary about a friend who died in the East Indies, and many (portrait) photos of family occasions etc., kept in cardboard box with address of firma Stufkens, Langendijk, Gorinchem.

Highly interesting archive of the Jewish general practitioner Nathan Schöyer, a legend of the Gorinchem area, who went into hiding during the war with his family, survived and immediately continued his practice in Gorinchem. In Gorinchem the Dokter Schöyerstraat is named after him. The notebook of his second wife, Karolina de Vries, deserves a special mention, with on one side written in pen "Zweeds III Lien de Vries". In 23 pages she writes about her loyal friend Jaap, who had died in the East Indies: "Vandaag las ik zijn naam in de krant. In een van die lange lijsten van doden en vermisten, die ons, nu ten lange leste de oorlog geeindigd is, uit Indië worden overgeseind. Ons Jaap is dood. Vermisten komen nu niet meer terecht. Wie in deze lijsten genoemd staat is onherroepelijk van ons heengegaan. Ik zal Jaap dus nooit meer terugzien. Geen tranen zijn in mij opgeweld, niet eens verdriet kan ik het noemen, dat doffe gevoel ergens in de buurt van mijn hart. Jaap was een jeugdvriend." Here follows an extensive, personal account about Jaap. The story ends with: "Daarna brak de oorlog uit en was ieder contact met Indië verbroken. En nu is hij dood. Hij was een goed mens, een trouw vriend."
