*In 1799 the ship Lutine sank somewhere between the Dutch islands of Vlieland and Terschelling with a cargo of gold and silver. Over time, the sunken ship disappeared underneath the sand. In 1933, the German malt producer Frans Beckers appears with a cone-shaped tower, twenty metres high, which he places over the wreck of the Lutine. As soon as the water and the sand have been pumped out of the tower, gold prospectors can begin their descent. Unfortunately the tower is destroyed. In 1935 a new tower survives the rough sea and the work begins. On June 6, however, the Terschelling diver Jan de Beer dies in a diving accident, leading to the unsuccessful end of the project.
