[Bindings] 17th cent. embroidered purple velvet binding,

richly decorated in embroidery w. abundant use of silver threads, both covers w. central crowned monogram surrounded by ornaments and fleurs-de-lys at the corners, the spine w. similar ornaments in compartments, gilt, richly gauffered and painted edges, thick 4to (21.5 x 15.5 x 11 cm).

Restored binding w. the orig. embroidered cl.; covering of sides and spine laid down on new boards and back w. matching modern purple cloth, lacking sm. portions and w. worn spots. New endpapers. The silver threads oxidated. Still, a spectacular and rare example of a late 17th cent. entirely embroidered velvet binding. On: Biblia, das ist: Die gantze H. Schrifft, Alten und Neuen Testaments, Teutsch, D. Martin: Luther: (...). Lünebourg, heirs Johan and Heinrich Stern Sel. Erben, 1672, 3 parts in 1 vol. (incl. Die Propheten mit den Apocyphis), (44),348; 248; 175 p., w. engr. frontisp. and 1 plate, woodcut printer's mark on all (divisional) titles (divisional titles of the 2nd and 3rd part with woodcut borders). The engravings both laid down and w. sm. holes and sl. dam. borders; leaf Gg of the Old Testament w. dam. border; occas. smaller internal imperfections.
