Circular engr., diameter 11.5 cm, w. central portrait in profile of Willem I van Oranje, surrounded by ornamental scenes w. captions in verse in Dutch and French, ca. 1577-78, mounted at left corners. A good impression on paper w. unidentified watermark. A few foxed spots, neatly repaired tear in upper margin and minor other imperfections. Hollstein 178. The engraving is a pendant of "De hoopman van narheit. Le capitaine des follie", depicting the duke Alva. (2) Johann Sadeler I (1550-1600). 'Ratio conquering Violentia'. Engr. after Maerten de Vos, 13.5 x 8 cm, dated 1579 in the plate, from a series of 9 prints depicting virtues conquering vices, under passepartout. A good impression, trimmed on/ near de plate mark.
