'Tree of Life' funerary hairwork
Southern Germany, ca. 1894, framed behind glass, 29 x 27.5 cm. A commemorative 'tree of life' made of human hair w. a handwritten text in German. Made in remembrance of Theodor Langenbacher (d. 1890) and his wife, Cëizilie (d. 1893).
Frame sl. worn, otherwise in good condition; not inspected outside of frame. Common during the 19th century, this type of art was most popular in Victorian era England as a way to remember and honour those who had passed.
