Flaherty, Robert J. (1884-1951). Two photogravures from the portfolio Nanook of the North

(1) Eskimo Fisherman in his Kayak. (2) Eskimo Omiak in the Spring. Both images approx. 21.5 x 15.5 cm, sheet 50 x 33.5 cm, marked '© Revillon Freres, N.Y.' and 'Robert J. Flaherty, F.R.G.S.' in the technique.

A few foxed spots in margins, not affecting the image. During a 1920 expedition to the Arctic, Flaherty captured these images which document the lives of the indigenous Inuit people. Sponsored by the fur company Revillon Frères, the expedition culminated in the creation of the silent film 'Nanook of the North.' Premiering in 1922, the film is hailed as a milestone in documentary filmmaking, celebrated for its authentic and captivating depiction of Inuit life. (total 2)
