Shagin was a prominent figure in Soviet photography, capturing nearly all the significant WWII battles for the USSR's principal national youth newspaper, Komsomolskaya Pravda. Intriguingly, the same soldier's body that is so prominent in this photograph also appears in another of Shagin's works from the conflict, titled 'Berlin, 1945'.
