Boxhorn, Marcus Zuerius van. Theatrum sive Hollandiae Comitatus et urbium nova descriptio

Amst., H. Hondius, n.d. (1632), (16),384,(15) p., w. engr. title, 5 full-p. maps and 39 full-p. plans, cont. overlapping vellum, obl. 4to. First 5 lvs sl. dam. in blank margins and reinforced w. strips of paper; partially waterst., foxing and browning throughout. Recased w. new endpapers, vellum stained and w. hole at top of spine.

With extensive dedication in Latin in pen on first blank (opposite the htitle), to Johan Skytte (1577-1645), tutor and later advisor to the Swedish King Gustavus II Adolphus, Governor-General of the provinces of Livonia, Carelia and Ingria (1629-1632) and the main initiator of the founding of the university in Tartu. It is possible (but impossible to verify) that this dedication was written by Van Boxhorn himself, as it is signed "Marcus Zuerius Boxhornius Postquam incredibile humanitate et favore me ["after unbelievable friendliness and favor towards me"] immerentem fuisset complexus". A work by Benedictus (Bengt) Skytte (1614-1683, son of Johan Skytte) was edited by Boxhorn and appeared in 1635.
