Marcel Duchamp. Audio Arts Volume 2 No 4 1976

Original cassette tape with illustrated wrappers. Side 1 (29 minutes) contains an interview with Duchamp by George Heard Hamilton in New York and Richard Hamilton in London, both in 1959. The artist talks about his complex work with great ease and clarity, in English. Topics discussed include Readymades, the Large Glass, the bicycle wheel, bottle dryer and snow shovel, the origins of Dada, Muybridge, Futurists, Balla and much more. Side 2 (29 minutes) continues the interview by Hamilton, followed by a 7 minute recording with Hermann Nitsch, made during a lunch at the Basel Art Fair in June 1975. Nitsch discusses his work, its sources and influences. A digital version of the tape can be supplied with the original cassette.

Audio Arts was the first art magazine to be published on audio cassette, founded by William Furlong and Barry Barker in 1973. The seminal aural archive of artists’ interviews, commentary and sound works existed over 35 years, producing 25 volumes of four issues each, and a large number of supplements, featuring exclusive contributions from hundreds of artists including Marcel Duchamp, Joseph Beuys, Marcel Broodthaers, Helen Chadwick et al.
