Faith Ringgold. Peoples Flag Show Nov. 9 '70 [sic]

Poster, offset lithograph, 45.7 × 61 cm, printed black and red. Announcement for a 6-day event at Judson Memorial Church in New York, organized by Faith Ringgold, Jon Hendricks and Jean Toche, intended as a protest against the widespread practice of charging people for desecrating the U.S. flag amid the Vietnam War. About 150 'artists and concerned citizens' contributed interpretations of the national symbol, ranging from a penis-shaped flag, baked flag cake, to a nude flag dance and flag burning ceremony.

Among the participants were feminist writer Kate Millett, activist Abbie Hoffman, choreographer Yvonne Rainer, artist Jasper Johns et al. During its final days, the organizers were arrested and accused of Desecration of the Flag, earning them the title 'The Judson 3'. African American artist Faith Ringgold (1930 - 2024) is best known for her series of narrative quilts, posters and paintings addressing issues of racism, censorship, and gender inequality. Important document with minimal edge wear, very good condition.
