Lourdes Castro (1930 – 2022) was a prominent Portuguese artist. From 1962 onwards she worked on the theme of 'shadows' in a variety of media. She painted projected shadows of objects and people on canvas, worked with plexiglass and cut-out positive/negative forms and embroidered shadows on bedsheets. In 1972 she created the seminal 'Large Herbarium of Shadows', a collection of silhouettes of about 100 botanical species captured in the sun on heliographic paper.
