[Tokens] Spence, Thomas (1750-1814). Read Spence's plan/ Land in partnership
Bronze token/ die, Ø2.6 cm, w. stamped text recto and verso, late 18th cent. This combination appears unrecorded. Issued within Thomas Spence's series of political tokens advocating land reform and communal ownership. Spence was a radical bookseller, coin dealer and pamphleteer, who campaigned for the abolition of private landownership, spreading the message through engraved tokens. He often used dies (tokens) by Peter Skidmore and designs by Thomas Bewick.
