[Puppet theatre] Guappo Tore 'e Criszienzo

Two rod puppets from theatre de Papi, Naples, late 19th cent. Height of Guappo is approx. 130 cm, height of Criszieno is approx. 95 cm. (Total size incl. rod approx. 200 cm). Mechanic puppets made of painted wood, fabric and a metal mechanism.

*Guappo was one of the villanous characters in Napolitan fold rod puppet theatre, featuring stories of Charlemagne's Knights and their battle against the Saracens, as well as stories on local camorra leaders. Tore 'e Criszienzo was one of the heroic popular characters in these stories, inspired by Neapolitan guappo tradition. The knight was one of Charlemaign's soldiers. *Collection Otto van der Mieden.
