[Surinam] Travel-album of pianist Willem Coenen (1836-1918)
Ca. 1892. Containing 78 albumen prints and 6 cyanotype photographs. Incl. 32 photographs of Paramaribo, most made during a summer festival near the Governor's House (now Presidentieel paleis van de Republiek Suriname), depicting a large procession featuring people of colour in a wide variety of costumes (incl. two men depicting the crest of Suriname) and other festive activities. Also incl. 4 photographs of Martinique (3x views and 1x portrait). Other photographs depict mostly views (incl. Oostende, Strassbourg, and The Hague) in Europe, a few made aboard ship. Some inserted ephemera, including a thank you letter (written in Spanish and Dutch), signed by the passengers of the S.S. "Amerique", thanking Willem Coenen for his piano playing aboard, dated 1892 and signed by approx. 40 people. In contemp. half leahter album, silk endpapers, oblong 4to (frontcover detached, lacking portion of spine).
