G.W. Rabener describes with mild derision the weaknesses of his fellow men. The first Dutch edition dates from 1763-1767, in 1774 publisher Pieter Meijer added as fifth volume 'Briefe' (1772), published separately after Rabener's death. The work saw many reprints.
